Community Caravan

New OrleansNew Orleans Community Development Tour

Hurricane Katrina left a swath of devastation along the gulf coasts of Louisiana and Mississippi and flooded much of New Orleans, causing an estimated $200 to $300 billion of property damage across a 300-mile stretch of the Gulf and triggering the largest emergency relief effort in U.S. history.

Years later the brutal aftermath of this disaster is still vivid. Nowhere were the effects of this horrific storm more visible than in New Orleans, where three major levee failures resulted in serious flooding affecting 80 percent of the city.

Today, New Orleans is the laboratory of America and a model for innovative community development efforts. The city provides the perfect venue to see how community groups, developers and financial institutions can work together to restore communities and restore hope.

The Colloquium Community Caravan will tour some exemplary sites in New Orleans. You’ll hear from the program administrators about how they partnered with the community on complex financial arrangements and obtained funding to provide needed services within the community. More than just a session, you will get to see first-hand the people and resources that make these programs successful.
