First State Bank
Barry K. Matthews
Vice-President Community Relations and Business Development Officer
First State Bank of Jackson, Tennessee received the award for jointly launching with the United Way “SavingsPoint,” the nation’s first and only community pilot during the 2008 tax season, enabling volunteers or staff to open bank accounts for low-income clients at Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) free tax preparation sites. The bank accounts could be immediately used for the direct deposit information on the IRS tax form. First State created new checking and savings account products specifically for SavingsPoint and the new VITA clientele. First State Bank was commended at the 2008 Colloquium for its role in helping low-income families establish a relationship with a mainstream financial institution which is such a critical first step in decreasing vulnerability to predatory lenders, establishing credit, and building assets. The award was sponsored and presented by Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC). Accepting the award on behalf of First State was Barry K. Matthews, Vice-President Community Relations and Business Development Officer. Mr. Matthews also spoke on a Colloquium panel about identifying community development opportunities. Session attendees said:
“Mr. Mathews provided invaluable advice on how to join forces with non-profit organizations.”
“Great examples of partnerships, tactics, & opportunities.”
“Provided good ideas on how to make community contacts and make efforts to discover what the challenges are in communities.”
